Dr. Hong-Wei Wu has come to Copper Point, Wisconsin, after the pressures of a high-powered residency burned him out of his career before he started. Ashamed of letting his family down after all they’ve done for him, he plans to live a quiet life as a simple surgeon in this tiny northern town. His plans, however, don’t include his outgoing, kind, and attractive surgical nurse, Simon Lane.

Simon wasn’t ready for the new surgeon to be a handsome charmer who keeps asking him for help getting settled and who woos him with amazing Taiwanese dishes. There’s no question—Dr. Wu is flirting with him, and Simon is flirting back. The problem is, St. Ann’s has a strict no-dating policy between staff, which means their romance is off the table… unless they bend the rules.

But a romance that keeps them—literally—in the closet can’t lead to happy ever after. Simon doesn’t want to stay a secret, and Hong-Wei doesn’t want to keep himself removed from life, not anymore. To secure their happiness, they’ll have to change the administration’s mind. But what other secrets will they uncover along the way, about Copper Point… and about each other?

When I saw that Heidi Cullinan was releasing a brand spanking new series I jumped on it. She is after all the author of my “all-time favorite” Carry The Ocean, and let’s not forget “hot as balls Dirty Laundry. All the reasons for me to give this one a go 😉

because reasons gif - Google zoeken

Now as much as I enjoyed reading this story, it didn’t blow me away like “Carry the Ocean” did. I don’t think anything ever will, so I am just gonna accept this fact. What I did love about this book was the “hospital setting“. I devour hospital series like crazy and so this was right up my alley.

hospital series gif - Google zoeken

Hong-Wei is a new surgeon (read wonder doctor) at the hospital where Simon works as a nurse. It is pretty much love at first sight. I am not a huge fan of “insta-love” but I tried not to let it bother me too much.

The problem with falling in love with a co-worker/superior is the fact that it’s against hospital policy. I myself am all for breaking the rules…but I can understand that your job is somewhat important fcc37b1805a49c13a3f7d3d50b64ed47

It was sweet and intriguing, though I could have done with a bit more steam, but that’s probably just me 9f01372377900d9203bc4efe48eb1659

I am very curious about the next book and I will definitely read it !!

Mallory is a wildlife photographer facing one of my own biggest fears…Every year she travels through Alaska to take pictures of the animals. This year though, the plane she is flying herself (how kickass is that !!) goes down.

plane crashing gif - Google zoeken

Damn I hate flying !!! Thankfully she lives, and is saved by a mountain man7e6c22cc4c29adb0f4a619d0806b71f1

Michael has been running from his past and living a secluded life in Alaska for the last 5 years.  Mallory (literally) crashing into his life forces him to change his ways. She is depending on him to keep her safe…

This was definitely an adventurous read and there were times I was sitting at the edge of my seat. The romance part was a bit too slow burn for me though… It wasn’t anything like the “Thoughtless” series. That’s not to say that it wasn’t good…just very different.

not a fan gif - Google zoekenI also wasn’t a huge Mallory fan. She came off as a bit pushy and I really don’t like that trade in my heroines… It reeks of desperation. Also the religion parts…not a huge fan.

Michael was a great guy, though he had his own hang-ups to deal with. All in all, I enjoyed this story but it didn’t blow me away like I hoped it would.

So…I actually read books 2 and 3, before I started this one. I would, however, recommend starting with book 1, because it’s the events from this book, that will lead to the set-up of book 2. I am just a crazy person who likes to do things ass-backward. I had no problems with following the storyline of book 2 without reading this book first, but I will say that reading this one…gave me more insight into book 2 and 3. So learn from my mistakes 😛

rach15.gif (500×270)

Because I had already read “You loved me at my Weakest“, I knew what this book was gonna be about.. and I also went in…feeling a certain way. This did not help me enjoy it more…it actually pissed me off….so…yeah, really not a smart decision on my part.

After losing their parents, Lily and Shasha, who are Australian, decide to take a trip to America, New York to be specific. Their dream vacation soon turns into a nightmare of epic proportions, when they are kidnapped and thrown into the world of sex slavery. They are taken to Columbia where they are separated and locked away.

is-this-hell-buffy.gif (500×198)

The reason these girls have been taken is because Marco, the mean kingpin of the story, likes to add beautiful women from all over the world, to his collection. The women in his collection live together at a secret location. Once a month (sometimes more) Marco organizes a private party, where the women are displayed and sold to the highest bidder for the night. The bidders can do with them as they please…well…without marking his prized possessions that is.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor beautiful full girlLily is locked away in a beautiful room and assigned a personal guard…Jake. Jake lays it all out for her right away…there is no hope of escape and the more she will fight the harder things will be. He also makes it very clear to her, that if she doesn’t obey, her sister Sasha will pay the prize.

Sasha is not joining Marco’s collection. He has no use for her, so the plan is to auction her off as a sex-slave. Lily is really scared, but she is more scared for her sister than she is for herself. So she is willing to do whatever it takes to get her sister out of there.

tumblr_nqgclsA65B1tlqqoso1_500.gif (500×230)

I liked that Lily was a strong and feisty heroine, but I do have to say that there were moments she pissed me off. She kept being a hardass and disobeying….even when she knew chances where her sister would be hurt because of this. She just couldn’t stop running her mouth.

From the moment Jake laid eyes on Lily, he was done for. He is extremely attracted to Lily and he doesn’t want her in this awful hell.

But Jake has an agenda of his own and he can’t just let his feelings for Lily interfere with his own plans…plans he has been working on for years. So he does what he can, to keep her safe.

Lily feels the same attraction towards Jake, even though he is supposed to be one of the bad guys….she can’t help but fall for him.

Now this one was pretty heavy on the insta-love. Normally I can look past that, but being in the situation they were in….it felt a bit unbelievable. One moment she is taken away for a private party and being raped….and the next she is in love and having sex with Jake….one of the guys that is keeping her in this place…. ???

you-cant-be-serious-GIF.gif (500×242)

I had a bit of a hard time with that. I can’t imagine that a woman being raped a few days prior, would be excited about any form of sex so soon after, but hey…maybe that’s just me.

Slowly secrets are being revealed, and with secrets, I mean Jake’s secrets. He is on a mission of his own. He can’t help Lily escape, because he needs to find the secret location where “the collection” is being held.

Now Jake…I also had an issue with. Because for 4 years he has been working his ass off to complete this secret mission, that is very close to his heart. But after setting eyes on this one girl….everything changes and he is willing the to fuck everything up for her …??  Maybe this sounds a bit harsh from my part, but you will understand better once you figure out what his mission is really about.

BTVSJudgingYou.gif (300×274)

I will tell you that this book ends on a HEA…. if you can call it that, because this book is what leads to “You Loved me at My Weakest” (which is my favorite) and so many things are still messed up. So I will rephrase and say that it ends on a HEA for this couple. Which also made me pissed off with Jake, because when all is said and done….he takes his new found love Lily and leaves….without a backward glance…… I was really disappointed with him at this point.

Now don’t take my ranting the wrong way. I really did enjoy this book. It’s just that having read book 2…which I really loved…I was a bit prejudiced going into this one. This is why I advice reading these books in the right order 😉

I have read an enjoyed several books written by Chantal Fernandez in the past and I have got to admit that I was very curious about this spin-off. I had already read a little bit about Clover in Ace of Hearts, which made me even more curious about her story. Also…a MC Princess, who is also a cop…I just had to read about that.

I must gif - Google zoeken

Now as much as I enjoyed the story…and I did…there was just one thing, or I should say, one person, that bothered me throughout most of the book… Clover. For some reason, I did not feel any connection with her.  I felt she was acting a bit entitled. She wanted her cake and eat it too. She forced her friends to keep secrets from the club and she came off as very judgemental. She also acted as if she herself was the best thing since sliced bread, especially when it came to her job, while she was just a rookie. I also didn’t get how she thought that the police force would not know or care about her biker family….dense much !!

dense gif - Google zoeken

Since Clover’s mother also works for the FBI (informing or something) I didn’t get why Clover being a cop would be such a bad thing. I don’t get why and how she kept all of it a secret.

Now I did really like Felix. He’s her new partner and he really knows what he is doing, on and off the job 9f01372377900d9203bc4efe48eb1659 His father was killed by bikers and so he doesn’t carry around a lot of love when it comes to MC’s. That said, he does carry a lot of love for Clover and so he was willing to work through everything to be with her…

gay thouching gif - Google zoeken

I enjoyed the story and the suspense, but I have got to be honest and say that it was Felix and all the secondary characters that really made the book for me. I didn’t hate Clover but she definitely wasn’t my kind of heroine. She got better towards the end though 😉

Now I do have high hopes for Cara, she might be more of my liking. I also really liked Rhett so I am very curious to see what’s gonna happen with those two.

He’s built a quiet life for himself in Alaska. But it doesn’t stand a chance against the unrelenting pull of a man who’s everything he shouldn’t want.

Ex-military mountain man Griffin Barrett likes his solitude. It keeps him from falling back into old habits. Bad habits. He’s fought too hard for his sobriety to lose control now. However, his gig as a wildlife guide presents a new kind of temptation in superhot supermodel River Vale. Nothing the Alaskan wilderness has to offer has ever called to Griffin so badly. And that can only lead to trouble…

River has his own methods for coping. Chasing adventure means always moving forward. Nobody’s ever made him want to stand still—until Griffin. The rugged bush pilot is the very best kind of distraction, but the emotions he stirs up in River feel anything but casual, and he’s in no position to stay put.

With temptation lurking in close quarters, keeping even a shred of distance is a challenge neither’s willing to meet. And the closer Griffin gets to River, the easier it is to ignore every last reason he should run.

Warnings: Publisher’s Note: Arctic Sun deals with topics some readers may find difficult, including sobriety and eating disorders.

I think this was a nice enough read,  I am gonna be honest though and say that wasn’t completely blown away. Its the first book in a new series though, so I hope that the stories will keep getting better and better… It did make me want to take a nice long vacation to Alaska 😉

alaska wilderness gif - Google zoeken

Both of the MC’s struggle with some serious issues, which sets a bit of a serious tone right from the beginning.

Griffin is a bit of a lone wolf, but when his uncle needs his help he feels like he has to step up…which he does. Griffin is a military veteran and a (recovering) alcoholic. He is struggling his way through life. Staying put…is one of his ways of coping.

River is a former model still recovering from, and dealing with a very serious eating disorder. He deals with his issues in the exact opposite way…by moving from one place to another.

Now I have got to be honest here… I love a good slow burn, but this story was just a bit too slow for my tastes. There were even times I felt a tad bored. My mind started wandering off and that is never a good thing.

wandering mind gif - Google zoeken

That said…I did feel these two were good for each other. There was a certain sweetness about them. You know who didn’t have any sweetness… Griffin’s mom, I didn’t care for her at all.

All in all this was a nice read and I am curious about the next book in this series.

I have been a big fan of this series since book one and I have enjoyed all but one of them very much. Even though this is a bit of a shorty… I still really liked it. Now this series is called “Straight Guys” for a reason. They all feature a straight dude ending up in a gay relationship. Now they don’t usually just lie down and take it (<—- see what I did there), most of them fight against being gay, although I don’t really get why because they aren’t really homophobes either.  Continue reading
